UNRWA at AUS

UNRWA which is a United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East started an exhibition today to enlighten the AUS students about their plans to develop the refugee camps in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Palestinian West Bank and Ghaza.

The exhibition honors the Palestinian refugees in the Middle East who experienced exile due to the Arab Israeli conflict in 1938. 750,000 refugees are registered with UNRWA.  In total, there are about 7 million refugees all over the world from Jordan, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine that seek proper life standards and infrastructures.

In the corner called “Voices”, the exhibition displayed the voices of the Palestinians and their wishes to reach a good life in the refugee camps. Mr. Nabeeh Matanes, the senior and contracts engineer of UNRWA said, “Fund raisers from the United States and other countries keep promising donations to improve the living standards of those refugees. However, now all the refugees say their opinion and the things they need to make their life better.

He also mentioned how those camps have a lot of young people that lack youth clubs and activities. Moreover, the young adults are not even allowed to cross some borders and take a walk in their own country.

Mr. Ali Alsayed, the senior instructional engineer mentions, “We built a swimming pool for the Palestinians with a blue background. This can help them reminisce the times they spent on the Mediterranean seas. It is a way to help them connect to where they belong.”
